Liverpool closes in on Barcelona defender.
Friday, November 29, 2013 – Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of highly rated Barcelona defender, Martin Montoya.
Arsenal and Inter Milan have also been linked with the 22-yearsold but the Reds are leading the race for his signature after Liverpool managing director, Ian Ayre, was reported to have flown to Spain to open talks with the centre-back ahead of a potential January move, The Mirror reports.
Montoya will become a free agent at the end of the season but it appears Liverpool are willing to pay a fee to secure his signature as soon as the turn of the year.
Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers has admitted he will have to bring on board another defender after Jose Enrique was ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.
The versatile defender has made 22 appearances for the Spain U-21.
