You have failed Kenya over the Media Bill – you did nothing to address the serious concerns in it – MUDAVADI tells UHURU
Friday November 29, 2013 – Former Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi has criticized President Uhuru Kenyatta over the contentious Media Bill, saying his recommendations after rejecting the Bill failed far short of addressing the serious concerns of the media.
Speaking on Thursday, Mudavadi, who was also the Amani Presidential candidate, said the President had failed Kenya over the Bill because there is nothing he did to correct the anomaly in the Bill because all the contentious clauses including heavy fines to Journalists media are still intact.
“The President’s memorandum does not address the concerns raised by the Media Council effectively. As per Parliamentary procedures, Parliament will only debate the issues Uhuru pointed out which still leave the major areas of concern still pending”, said Mudavadi.
“The President has maintained the huge fines against the media and individual journalists, which were among the contentious issues, thereby criminalizing the profession. This is still unacceptable”, continued Mudavadi.
Mudavadi urged the Media Council to soldier on with the push for media freedom and to engage Parliament to address issues Uhuru Kenyatta overlooked.
